Surprisingly, strong face after-effects can be generated following exposures of only a few seconds [ 16 ] a disheartening revelation for those of us who instead spent hours adapting. This goes on until the maximum of eight stimuli or until a mistake is made. After-effects for face identity are instead strongly suppressed by binocular rivalry, pointing to a later site for the adaptation [ 72 ]. The diversity of these results concerning the nature of face adaptation is not surprising given that face stimuli will engage and potentially adapt many levels of visual processing, and that face perception itself may depend on a number of distinct processes with different characteristics for representing attributes such as identity and expression.
